Updated 28 January 2021
While these days may be unprecedented, your industry association is still here to assist with business resources during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Based on a thorough review of the guidance from multiple governments, i-SIGMA has released a statement that it is clear that information management, IT asset disposal, and secure data destruction are included in “essential services” to carry on during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Employees of data security firms have been classified as Essential Workers throughout the pandemic, and therefore, legitimately warrant such prioritization in the distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine. Though guidance regarding what is considered “Essential” during the pandemic varies by jurisdiction, one concept universal to all such guidance is that critical services provided to other critical infrastructures are deemed “Essential.” Assuring Essential Workers are among the first to be vaccinated is important to an accelerated and sustained recovery, and their prioritization is more than legally justified in any jurisdiction.
Present this letter as needed, explaining service providers’ Essential Services status in order to obtain necessary COVID-19 Vaccine Prioritization for employees, or use it as a template to create your own letter. When creating a customized letter, members are advised to reference their local governing body’s definitions on what are considered Essential Services.

i-SIGMA was recently asked if we had a template for notifying customers of a potential COVID-19 exposure. While there is no legal obligation to notify another of possible contact, there is an ethical choice. For verbiage, we sought council from the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM); they offer a free download for an employee notification on this same topic. Also, in our research, the CDC clearly states that essential workers may continue to operate following a potential exposure, so long as they remain asymptomatic. You can also receive anonymous exposure notifications on your phone. Learn more about all of these:

Members in the area are encouraged to utilize this statement as evidence to support your business’s continued operations.

The Government of Canada is taking immediate action to support Canadians and businesses facing hardship as a result of the global COVID-19 outbreak. To help Canadians and businesses get through these tough economic times, the Prime Minister announced that the Government is proposing to introduce a wage subsidy of 75 per cent for qualifying businesses, for up to 3 months, retroactive to March 15, 2020. This measure would support businesses that are hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and would help protect the jobs Canadians depend on during these difficult times.

The Families First Coronavirus Response Act was fast tracked through Congress and signed into law on 18 March 2020. i-SIGMA will work on breaking down what this means for service providers in the IG Industry in the coming days. You can learn about this legislation here.
Going into February one year ago, the economy was humming along. A month and half later, it came to a screeching halt. Over those initial months, surveys conducted by i-SIGMA showed how resilient our industry is. And, so, as the vaccine begins to roll out, we asked members to compare where they are now, to where they were before it hit.
In the association’s latest monthly member survey, tracking the effects of COVID-19 across our industry, it appears that for the first time, more than half of respondents say they are doing business with 90% or more of their pre-shutdown customers. While this optimism is good to hear, there are other tracked data points that show how the shutdowns continue affecting businesses less positively.
The results of the fifth Member Sentiment Survey are in and reflect the reality that first appeared last month. When the lockdown orders first appeared around the world, most service providers felt the impact on revenues would be devastating, while thinking (perhaps wishfully) at the same time that it would only last a few months. Last month we began seeing data points that reflect a change in these previously held ideas.
Discover the Results of the Latest Member Survey
Earlier this month we once again surveyed our members on how the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic seem to affect their business. We are happy to report it appears the improvements and optimism reflected in last month’s survey results continue.
After a couple months of news going from bad to worse, there are signs things might be turning around. Stock markets around the world seem to thinks so. So do many corporate executives. Shelter-in-place orders are relaxing. i-SIGMA members think so too, at least according to the results of the second i-SIGMA COVID-19 survey measuring industry sentiment.
View the Latest Survey Results
In looking more closely at our first survey results to analyze commonalities between those seeing the greatest and least revenue losses, we can draw a few conclusions. It seems that businesses operating in Records Management are the most protected against the immediate losses of the pandemic, as one would expect based on the business model. While data destruction companies in general have varied widely in the amount of losses, regardless of market or marketing efforts it seems that as with natural disasters and viruses themselves, the economic impact of a pandemic can feel at random.
i-SIGMA conducted an anonymous survey of members to gauge the impact the COVID-19 outbreak is having on businesses within the secure data destruction and records and information management industry. Review this real-time snapshot of what others are currently experiencing based on market size and services offered. After all, we’re all in this together.

The current pandemic is sending mixed signals about the future of recycled paper pricing. On one hand, paper products are flying off store shelves, China has resumed production, and international tariffs have been eased. On the other, some are predicting a recession and everyone expects a long climb back to prosperity. To help understand how these factors will impact our members’ businesses, i-SIGMA has arranged for one of the foremost authorities on recycled paper consumption to discuss the near and long-term impact of the current pandemic on future recycled paper pricing.
Presented by Bill Moore, President of Moore & Associates, an international consulting firm that provides a range of strategic services and research to global organizations active in recycling and sustainability.
